1.
Cincinnati Bengals – QB Joe Burrow
As expected. Not much to talk about here.
2.
Washington Redskins – DE Chase Young
Also expected. He joins a very good Redskins defensive line, joining Ryan Kerrigan, Montez Sweat, Daron Payne, and Jonathan Allen, all former first-rounders.
3.
Detroit Lions – CB Jeff Okudah
What many expected as the replacement for Darius Slay. They fielded trade offers, but they got the best corner in the draft.
4.
New York Giants – OT Andrew Thomas
Smart pick. The top four tackles were all interchangeable, Thomas is considered the safest pick, and the official top lineman off the board.
5.
Miami Dolphins – QB Tua Tagovailoa
Tank for Tua worked! He’ll have a perfect opportunity in Miami to sit for a year behind Ryan Fitzpatrick and hopefully take over in 2021, if not sooner.
6.
Los Angeles Chargers – QB Justin Herbert
Another expected quarterback pick, the Chargers will do what the Browns did in 2018 with Tyrod Taylor and have Herbert sit behind him until he’s ready.
7.
Carolina Panthers – DT Derrick Brown
The best player available and fills a massive need on the defensive line. They lost Gerald McCoy, Vernon Butler, and Dontari Poe, leaving just Kawaan Short. Great pick for the star of the Carolina rebuild.
8.
Arizona Cardinals – LB Isaiah Simmons
The next best player available, Simmons is a swiss army knife on defense and can play anywhere. Coaching is important for him to make sure his skill set will be proper utilized.
9.
Jacksonville Jaguars – CB C.J. Henderson
The second-best corner available, the Jags needed a new star corner, and Henderson fits that bill.
10.
Cleveland Browns – OT Jedrick Wills
Very smart pick by the Browns, needed a new left tackle, and Wills was considered the top guy by many.
11.
New York Jets – OT Mekhi Becton
Another expected move to take a tackle, and the Jets got a behemoth. He’ll be blocking Darnold on the left side for years to come.
12.
Las Vegas Raiders – WR Henry Ruggs
The top receiver off the board is not Jeudy or Lamb, its Ruggs. The speed demon from Alabama is a perfect fit in Vegas and fills the speed role in that offense.
13.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (via 49ers & Colts) – OT Tristan Wirfs
Bucs traded up one spot to make sure no one else would, and get the final big 4 tackle in Wirfs, who I thought would be the first tackle taken. He’s played mostly right tackle at Iowa, so he could slide in there, where there’s a vacancy, or move to the left and Donovan Smith moves to the right. Either way, a massive upgrade to the line that’ll be protecting Tom Brady.
14.
San Francisco 49ers (via Buccaneers) – DT Javon Kinlaw
I didn’t expect this pick, but I really should’ve because it makes so much sense. They needed a guy in the middle after trading DeForest Buckner, and he joins a star-studded defensive line littered with talented first-rounders. That’s now five of the last six drafts where San Fran has taken a defensive lineman in the first round.
15.
Denver Broncos – WR Jerry Jeudy
The perfect pick for the Broncos. They really needed a receiver opposite Courtland Sutton, and Jeudy is an absolute stud and they must feel so lucky and relieved that they got him.
16.
Atlanta Falcons – CB A.J. Terrell
The Falcons needed a corner, and they got the third corner of the board. There were reports that they were trying to move into the top 10 to take a corner, but they stayed pat and got Terrell, who fills in immediate need on defense. Good first pick.
17.
Dallas Cowboys – WR CeeDee Lamb
In my early mocks, I had the Cowboys taking a receiver, but switched to defense before the draft, and I should’ve stuck to my gut. Lamb is an elite run-after-catch receiver and gives Dak Prescott a nice new weapon alongside Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup.
18.
Miami Dolphins (via Steelers) – OT Austin Jackson
The Dolphins got their new left tackle to protect their new franchise QB. Jackson was considered the leader of the next tier of tackles after the big four, and he fits in nicely in Miami and fills an immediate need.
19.
Las Vegas Raiders (via Bears) – CB Damon Arnette
The first shocker of the night in terms of player, not position. I thought they’d take a corner here, as they had an immediate need, but did not expect Arnette, who I actually didn’t even know about. Mike Mayock and the Raiders love to make unexpected picks (Clelin Ferrell 4th overall last year), and they did it again here.
20.
Jacksonville Jaguars (via Rams) – DE K’Lavon Chaisson
The Jags definitely did not expect Chaisson to still be here at their second pick of the first round. He replaces Calais Campbell and likely Yannick Ngakoue and will pair nicely with last year’s first rounder, who also fell into their lap, Josh Allen.
21.
Philadelphia Eagles – WR Jalen Reagor
The Eagles finally took a receiver, just not one many expected to be the fourth receiver taken. I don’t know much about Reagor, just that he was part of the next tier of wideouts, but it was the Eagles top need and they addressed it.
22.
Minnesota Vikings (via Bills) – WR Justin Jefferson
This is the receiver I thought would be fourth, but if the fifth receiver taken, and will join Adam Thielen in Minnesota as the Stefon Diggs replacement.
23.
Los Angeles Chargers (via Patriots) – LB Kenneth Murray
The Patriots traded back (shocker), and the Chargers made a rare trade up back into the first round to take Murray, a do-it-all sideline-to-sideline linebacker which off the charts character traits and leadership skills. This is a smart move by the organization to get a culture-changer in Murray.
24.
New Orleans Saints – C Cesar Ruiz
I do not agree with this pick in the slightest. While Ruiz is a great player, and the top interior OL, the Saints have no need for an offensive lineman, let along a center. They drafted Erik McCoy in the second round and started all 16 games, and was really good. They gave LG Andrus Peat an extension and they still have RG Larry Warford under contract, both Pro Bowlers. Warford is in the final year of his contract, do maybe they’re thinking of the future? But they should’ve gotten someone who can help now while Drew Brees is still there. Get a wide receiver. Get a linebacker. Get a cornerback. Don’t get a backup offensive lineman. Not a smart pick by New Orleans.
25.
San Francisco 49ers (via Vikings) – WR Brandon Aiyuk
The 49ers got their receiver, and a good one in Aiyuk. A shorter, tougher receiver with super long arms, similar to Deebo Samuel, will fit in well in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. Fills an immediate need to join that offense.
26.
Green Bay Packers (via Dolphins & Texans) – QB Jordan Love
Another shocker in the first round, and Aaron Rodgers got Brett Favred. Instead of giving Rodgers a much-needed weapon, they traded up to get his successor, much like how the Packers drafted Rodgers in 2005 when they still had Favre. I understand that you’re taking a quarterback now so you don’t have to take one later when you need to, but at least don’t trade up to do so. This cannot be sitting well with Rodgers.
27.
Seattle Seahawks – LB Jordyn Brooks
The Seahawks always either trade out of the first round, or take a random defensive player no one has heard of (I still don’t know anything about their first-rounder last year L.J. Collier). Brooks joins a loaded linebacker group led by Bobby Wagner, and will likely compete for snaps.
28.
Baltimore Ravens – LB Patrick Queen
This is a perfect Ravens pick. I can’t believe Queen fell this far, and neither can the Ravens. The had a big need at linebacker the past two years, and they got a stud in Queen. Baltimore just keeps making good picks.
29.
Tennessee Titans – OT Isaiah Wilson
Solid pick. With Jack Conklin gone, Wilson will compete with Dennis Kelly for the starting right tackle job.
30.
Miami Dolphins (via Packers) – CB Noah Igbinoghene
Never heard of this guy, and a position I didn’t think needed to be addressed. They made Byron Jones the highest-paid corner after making Xavien Howard the second-highest paid corner. Igbinoghene will likely be in the slot, but this is a dangerous secondary now.
31.
Minnesota Vikings (via 49ers) – CB Jeff Gladney
Good job by the Vikings taking another position of need. The lost their top 3 corners this offseason, and desperately needed another corner alongside Mike Hughes.
32.
Kansas City Chiefs – RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire
The first running back off the board is a Chief, and one many thought would be a Day 2 pick. But after watching this guy’s highlights, he is the real deal. The feet of Darren Sproles, the power and aggressive nature of Devonta Freeman with sprinkles of Doug Martin. Edwards-Helaire is going to be a nightmare in that offense.
