Former NFL MVP Cam Newton has reached agreement on a one-year, incentive-laden deal with the New England Patriots, league sources tell @mortreport and me.

Newton now will step into the mix to try to help replace former Patriots’ QB Tom Brady.
What a Schefter bomb on a Sunday night. The Patriots are signing the former MVP to a one-year, incentive-heavy $7.5M deal. That’s high backup, borderline starter money right there, and the plan is for Cam to compete with Jarrett Stidham for the starting job. I was a firm believer in Stidham, but I couldn’t help but sense something else in the air this entire offseason that something was up, and I guess I was right.
I’m honestly in shock. I don’t quite know what to think. I love Cam as a player, but he’s been a bit controversial in recent years and has had some odd behavior and social media posts (see his freaky font on his posts). But the biggest concern is health. Is he even healthy? Based on his social media posts throwing to Odell Beckham Jr., it seems to me he’s on the right track.
Well Cam is officially a Patriot, we shall see if he emerges as the Week 1 starter, or does Stidham use this as motivation. The Patriots just got interesting again.
