After getting into a fight with fellow safety Chuck Clark in practice on Friday, the Ravens are reportedly parting ways with the 7-time Pro Bowler. He has been away from the team since the altercation and the Ravens have made it official to cut Thomas.
Over the past couple of seasons, Thomas has been displaying really odd behavior. He cussed out the Seahawks and wanted out due to his contract. He went into the Dallas Cowboys locker room shouting to come get him. And there’s the notorious clip of him flipping off the sideline while being carted off with a season-ending injury. And that was just in 2018 in Seattle.
In free agency, when he signed with the Ravens, it was deemed a perfect fit, and it was. The Ravens needed a new free safety after parting with Eric Weddle, and he played pretty well in 2019. Behind the scenes, he had gotten into an argument with defensive tackle Brandon Williams, likely one of many arguments or altercations that had occurred that we don’t know about.
Fast forward to this offseason, there was the incident where he was caught cheating on his wife with another woman and his brother, but we all know that story, and I’m not gonna get into that.
Now, with this incident with Clark, that pushed the Ravens organization over the edge. Players fighting is not uncommon on the practice field, but because there was a history of incidents with Thomas, it became the final straw and they had enough and outright released him.
Now for the Ravens, this creates a massive void at safety. The presumed replacement is DeShon Elliott, a 2018 sixth-rounder, who has missed the majority of his first two seasons due to injury. They will likely add a free agent, and there aren’t too many free safeties out there.

I’m speculating this could also be an Antonio Brown-type situation: act out to get fired from your current team and go to the team he truly wanted, the Cowboys. There were reports that the Chiefs were in on a one-year deal for Thomas last year, but the Ravens swooped in with a four-year deal. It’s unlikely he’ll go to the Chiefs, as they got Juan Thornhill to pair with Tyrann Mathieu.
Thomas has got some options for a new team. My top teams based on need:
- Cowboys
- Jaguars
- Eagles
- 49ers
- Washington
I don’t know where he’ll ultimately end up, if anywhere at all. Best of luck to Earl Thomas, but not really, he’s kind of a psycho.
