2020 Draft Class Review: #22 Jacksonville Jaguars

One of the strangest classes of 2020, the Jaguars definitely had one of my favorites at the time, but quickly turned bad and really underwhelmed, but still had some good players.

With their first first-round pick, the Jaguars selected C.J. Henderson, and was an instant stud. In Week 1 he had five tackles, a pick, and a game-clinching pass breakup. The rest of his season was solid, but missed the second half of the year with a groin injury. Two games in to the 2021 season, he was surprisingly traded to the Panthers along with a fifth for Dan Arnold and a third, used to select LB Chad Muma. Henderson’s played 39 games in Carolina with 22 starts, including two picks in 2022. He got his fifth-year option declined, and his market will be interesting. A former top 10 pick who flashed potential and has been a steady starter could get paid.

The second first-round pick, acquired from the Rams in the Jalen Ramsey trade, K’Lavon Chaisson was selected to provide much needed pass rush alongside Josh Allen. He has not done that. His playing time declined as the years went on as he slipped down the depth chart, and only recorded five sacks in four years, not what you want out of a first-round pass rusher. He got his fifth-year option declined, and won’t have a big market.

A player I loved in this draft was Laviska Shenault, and had a solid start. With 600+ yards his first two seasons, the second-rounder looked like a real threat as a receiver and runner. He was then traded to the Panthers for a sixth and seventh and did next to nothing his final two seasons. He’s very talented and can thrive in the right system, so don’t be surprised if a team overpays.

The unsung hero of the current Jaguars roster is DaVon Hamilton, who’s developed into a starting defensive tackle, and earned a contract extension.

Ben Bartch had plenty of starting experience, being named a starter following an early injury in 2021, then the Week 1 left guard starter the following year before a season-ending injury. He was named the starter again in 2022 but was benched and later released and signed by the 49ers.

Josiah Scott lasted one year before being traded to the Eagles and also had a short stint with the Steelers.

A couple special teams players have stuck around in Shaquille Quarterman and Daniel Thomas, with the latter getting some defensive playing time early before a demotion.

The next three players only lasted one year in Collin Johnson, Jake Luton, and Tyler Davis with all of them bouncing around different practice squads.

Chris Claybrooks has some starting experience, but missed the 2023 season on the commissioner’s exempt list as he was arrested twice for domestic violence.
